Santa Barbara County sheriff loses

After a year of embarrassing incidents involving a now-defunct law enforcement charity, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Jim Anderson lost his seat in Tuesday’s election to Lompoc Police Chief Bill Brown.
Anderson’s department had benefited from donations by the Sheriff’s Council, but the group was rocked last year by internal conflict and fiscal irregularities.
The county’s sheriff since 2002, Anderson broke with the council but his association with it dogged him throughout the contentious campaign. He also was accused of doing too little about jail overcrowding.
