A shift in government

Re “GOP ceded the center and paid the price,” news analysis, Nov. 8
Now that the election is over, perhaps Republicans might appreciate a little advice. If you intend to regain power, consider getting back to basics. Lower taxes, more freedom and less government are what rank-and-file members really care about. Immigration and the Iraq mess are important too.
Also, consider fielding candidates who care more about the people than lining their pockets will ill-gotten gains. And finally, visit your GOP website and read the section on what a Republican is. Follow the basics and maybe you’ll be back in power one day.

Imagine being Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R-R.I.): Your state gives you an approval rating of over 60% and you still lose. The Republicans can rest easy knowing that in two years they won’t have President Bush to defeat them anymore.
