In this tri-level house, even the tub in the master bath has an ocean view.
The free-standing tub sits center stage in what architects describe as a “transparent environment,” where an occupant can see through the glass walls and decorative glass arch to the beach and beyond.
Step outside and there are similar views from terraces overlooking 50 feet of beachfront.
The home, in Malibu, was built in 1977 but was recently re-designed by architect Jay Vanos. He gave the house its sleek, sculptured look, including the kitchen’s stainless-steel appliances and the entertainment room’s seemingly invisible sliding doors.
Adding to the house’s contemporary look are its steel frame, glass railings, three-story atrium and skylights, which open by remote control.
About this house: Vanos, an instructor at the Southern California Institute of Architecture since 1985, sought with this house to appeal to those who love nature, are artistic and have a sophisticated sense of style.
Asking price: $17.5 million
Size: The 5,535-square-foot house has four bedrooms and 6 1/2 bathrooms.
Features: The house has travertine floors, Douglas fir ceilings, a wet bar, a wine cellar, a study, a two-car garage, high-tech lighting and sound, and a plasma TV. In the master bath, there is a steam shower. In the kitchen is a built-in espresso machine. There is a double-gated entry.
