Part of Interstate Closed as Brush Fire Rages
From Times Wire Reports
Winds fanned a 1,000-acre brush fire, forcing authorities to close a five-mile section of Interstate 95 in Brevard County.
The fire started in the afternoon, probably caused by lightning, said Dennis Neterer, assistant chief of Brevard Fire Rescue.
No damage or injuries were reported, but several residents voluntarily evacuated their homes to escape the smoke.
More than 2,700 wildfires have charred nearly 104,800 acres in the state since Jan. 1, according to the state Division of Forestry.
