Council Backs McCain Immigration Legislation

The City Council voted Friday to support federal legislation by U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) that would create a guest worker program and a path to citizenship for many illegal immigrants.

The council voted 14 to 0 to support the original bill, which is being negotiated in Congress, after hearing from Cardinal Roger M. Mahony of the Los Angeles Archdiocese, who testified that the nation needs an immigration reform law that is “just, humane and fair.”
