About 250,000 Lebanese workers, students and activists -- some backed by pro-Syria groups -- marched through Beirut protesting a proposed tax hike and calling for the anti-Syria prime minister to resign.
The crowd waved Lebanese flags and political party banners as they shouted for Prime Minister Fouad Siniora to step down.
Teachers unions had called for the demonstration, meaning the large turnout could not be attributed only to foes of Siniora. The crowd dispersed peacefully after about 90 minutes.
