Sunshine Canyon deal carries a high cost

Re “City to Pay More, but Dump Less,” March 18
The L.A. mayor and the City Council backed out of a bargain on Sunshine Canyon supposedly in the name of the environment. What a farce! There may be plans for reducing the volume sent to landfills, but in the meantime the reality is that L.A. will pay more for its reduced use of Sunshine Canyon while burning more energy to ship trash to faraway places. The mayor talked of “balancing decisions.” There is no balance. Sunshine Canyon is still open, and landfill operator BFI is probably reviewing its long list of potential customers. Council President Eric Garcetti extolled the decision as showing leadership, but selling our prime waste resource for political points from a small NIMBY interest group is cowardice.
