Man Kills 1 in Rampage Before Police Kill Him

A gunman shot six people, killing one, and started several fires at a 1.3-million-square-foot Safeway Inc. distribution center before police killed him, authorities said.

“He was just shooting and lighting fires,” said Safeway worker Jesus Lopez, who was about 20 feet from the gunman.

Police said two of the gunfire victims were in critical condition, two were in serious condition -- including an officer who suffered a leg wound -- and one had been released from the hospital.

Authorities would not identify the gunman or say whether he worked for Safeway.
