White Sox Win 19-Inning Game

From the Associated Press

No one was happier than Tadahito Iguchi when he put an end to a pre-All-Star break marathon on Sunday.

Iguchi’s bases-loaded single in the 19th inning sent the Chicago White Sox to a 6-5 win over the Boston Red Sox in a 6-hour 19-minute game that began in sunshine and ended with the lights on at Chicago’s U.S. Cellular Field.

The teams each used eight pitchers who combined to throw 570 pitches.

“I’m glad it ended when it did,” said Iguchi, who is bothered by a sprained ankle. “Now I’m ready to use the All-Star break to get healthy.”

Jermaine Dye tied the score with two out in the ninth inning with a homer against closer Jonathan Papelbon, the first run the rookie has given up on the road.

Red Sox starter Curt Schilling gave up two runs and five hits in six innings, including a line-drive run-scoring single by Jim Thome that hit Schilling in the right elbow in the sixth. Schilling stayed in and retired the last two batters, but then his elbow began to swell.

“It’s pretty swollen and pretty sore,” Schilling said. “The spot where it got me, it wasn’t going to be long. As soon as I got in the dugout within 20 or 30 seconds, there was no shot of me being able to throw a baseball.”
