Listening to Gore’s warning

Re “Gore Calls for an Investigation of Warrantless Spy Program,” Jan. 17
Americans should take it seriously when a former vice president and presidential candidate says “that immediate steps [should] be taken to safeguard our Constitution against the present danger posed by the intrusive overreaching on the part of the executive branch and the president’s apparent belief that he need not live under the rule of law.” Al Gore is hardly an alarmist. When he warns us that our liberties are in danger, it is time to demand that our Congress takes action.

Gore, winner of the 2000 presidential election’s popular vote, delivered one of the most important and urgent speeches of our time, and you failed to report it as front-page news. There is little hope for a democracy when the fourth branch of government becomes subservient to the executive branch.
