Boy Who Asked to Be Set on Fire Is Hospitalized

From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A 13-year-old Orange boy was hospitalized and his 15-year-old friend was arrested on suspicion of assault after the older teen complied with his friend’s request to be set on fire, police said Sunday.

The incident occurred about 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the victim’s home on Bourbon Street.

Witnesses told police the 13-year-old doused his shirt with cologne, then asked his friend to squirt him with lighter fluid and ignite the shirt. “I don’t think they expected the kid to get burned -- just the shirt,” Sgt. Fred Lopez said.

The boy was reported in critical but stable condition at UCI Medical Center in Orange. He is expected to recover, Lopez said.
