Connecticut Ends Cincinnati’s Streak

Hilton Armstrong has established himself as a presence in the middle for fourth-ranked Connecticut.
Armstrong dominated inside with 14 points, 10 rebounds and six blocked shots to lead Connecticut to a 70-59 victory over Cincinnati at Hartford, Conn., ending the Bearcats’ 10-game winning streak.
“We’re a physical team. Anybody that’s trying to come at us, we’re right there,” Armstrong said. “We’re not backing down from anybody.”
It was the second straight game he came up big for the Huskies, 13-1 overall and 1-1 in the Big East Conference. Armstrong scored six of his 11 points in the final four minutes to help the Huskies rally from a 14-point deficit and beat Louisiana State, 67-66, Saturday.
The Bearcats (13-3, 2-1played the Huskies for the only time this regular season.
“Any league win is good,” Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun said. “It was a terrific defensive performance for us, a physical performance for us. In this league don’t bank on nine wins. There’s just too many good teams.”
James White led Cincinnati with 18 points. Eric Hicks added 14 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots.
No. 6 Gonzaga 81, Santa Clara 68 -- Adam Morrison had 34 points, six rebounds and five assists at Santa Clara, Calif., to lead the Zags (12-3, 2-0) to their 11th straight West Coast Conference regular-season victory.
Travis Niesen had 22 points for Santa Clara (8-6, 1-1), which hasn’t beaten Gonzaga since a home victory in February 2001.
No. 8 Texas 78, Iowa State 58 -- Kenton Paulino scored a career-high 20 points at Ames, Iowa, to help the Longhorns (13-2, 2-0 Big 12) extend their winning streak to five games.
Rahshon Clark scored 18 points for the Cyclones (11-4, 1-1).
No. 10 Louisville 81, UC Davis 58 -- Brandon Jenkins scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Cardinals (13-2) past the Aggies (4-10) at Louisville, Ky.
Jenkins was 11 for 13 from the field, including seven for nine from three-point range as the Cardinals cruised in their final nonconference game despite playing without leading scorer Taquan Dean.
Kyle Brucculeri scored 15 for UC Davis.
