“Tsotsi,” based on Athol Fugard’s novel, will open the Pan African Film Festival at a Feb. 9 screening and gala hosted by Forest Whitaker at the Directors Guild of America.
A Golden Globe nominee for best foreign film and South Africa’s Oscar submission, “Tsotsi” observes the evolution of the mercilessly violent title character, whose name means “thug,” who has to confront the consequences of his actions after he kills a woman during a carjacking.
The festival runs through Feb. 20 with screenings and arts events at the Magic Johnson Theaters and Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza. For tickets call (323) 295-1706 or visit www.paff.org.
