Music appointment: Los Angeles Philharmonic’s assistant conductor, Alexander Mikelthwate, has been named music director of the Winnipeg (Canada) Symphony Orchestra, beginning in the 2006-07 season. His three-year appointment will overlap with his Philharmonic post, which has been extended for another season and upgraded to associate conductor.
