A Hollywood stuntman being treated in a Chinese hospital after suffering head injuries during a show in Shanghai has regained consciousness and can communicate with gestures, a report said Tuesday.

Doctors have refused to discuss the condition of Oldrich Svarousky, 48, but an employee of Filmka Stunt Group, identified as Yuan Yuan, told the state-run newspaper Shanghai Daily that Svarousky was able to open his eyes and that he was “on the right track to recovery.”

Svarousky was seriously injured Dec. 16 when his head hit a flaming ring and he fell from a moving car during the show at Shanghai’s Zhabei Stadium. The stuntman, who has performed in Hollywood blockbusters such as “Men in Black” and “Taxi Driver,” is being treated at the city’s No. 10 People’s Hospital.
