Team tries to build on its victory at Houston

SALT LAKE CITY —  In Saturday’s 98-93 victory over the Houston Rockets, the Clippers proved they were capable of defeating a winning team on the road, minus the opponent’s two All-Stars.

Tracy McGrady sat out his seventh consecutive game because of a back injury and Yao Ming suffered a broken bone in his right leg in the first quarter. The Clippers defeated the lowly Memphis Grizzlies for their only other road victory and are 2-9 away from Staples Center.

“We’re a work in progress,” Cuttino Mobley said. “You see that when we play the right way, we’re capable of doing big things. Why don’t we play the right way all the time? If I had the answer to that, we wouldn’t be” 2-9 on the road.

And tonight the Clippers face the formidable Utah Jazz. Utah is first in the Northwest Division and is 11-2 at EnergySolutions Arena.

On Nov. 14, the Jazz routed the Clippers, 112-90, at Salt Lake City.

Utah also defeated the Clippers, 105-86, at Staples Center on Dec. 13.

Update -- Power forward Carlos Boozer and point guard Deron Williams have been big problems for the Clippers in two losses to Utah. Boozer is averaging 22 points and 15 rebounds, and Williams is averaging 22 points and 10.5 assists.
