Attorneys’ fees in lawsuit settlements

Re “Much more than dog food,” Opinion, Dec. 7
Attorney Genie Harrison presents a compelling argument in the Tennie Pierce case against the Los Angeles Fire Department, but I have a couple of questions: Why refer to “attorney’s fees” when discussing the settlement package? Why not just say “my fee”? Why do attorneys deserve a high (not just a nominal) percentage of the settlement fee? They are highly paid by the hour. If Harrison is willing to waive all but her hourly expenses, she would have more credibility.

As one who practiced law, I saw victims get but a small fraction of that amount for serious injuries. What Harrison continues to perpetrate is a society gone mad with litigation. The mayor was right to oppose such an outlandish settlement.
