Deputy Chief Appointed to Head Fire Department

State and local officials on Tuesday appointed a new chief of Riverside County’s massive fire department, which is part of the state’s fire agency.
John Hawkins is the department’s former deputy chief and a 42-year veteran of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
He will manage the protection of 7,000 square miles and direct fire operations for 16 cities, one community service district and unincorporated areas. The previous chief, Craig Anthony, became general manager of the Pebble Beach Community Services District.
