To Aid Salmon, PUC Scraps Farmers’ Subsidy

State utility regulators voted Thursday to phase out electricity subsidies for farmers along the Klamath River, a move fishermen and environmentalists hope will help save a struggling salmon population.
The five-member Public Utilities Commission voted unanimously to raise electricity rates over the next four years.
By making irrigation more expensive, fishermen and conservationists hope farmers will pump less water, leading to higher flows that would facilitate spawning.
