Evidence Room to be homeless

Bart DeLorenzo, founder and artistic director of the Evidence Room, says the theater company will “end the relationship between the Evidence Room and the space we have called our home for the past six years,” effective July 31.

DeLorenzo cited “leadership issues” and an “irreconcilable lease dispute” among the problems forcing the 11-year-old company to leave its current home, a 99-seat theater in a former bra factory on Beverly Boulevard in Echo Park.

In an e-mail memo to friends and colleagues, DeLorenzo ended months of speculation about the company’s future by saying it would present its final production, Chekhov’s “The Cherry Orchard,” in May.

In an interview Monday, DeLorenzo said that the future of the company remains undecided. “We plan to go out with a bang in July and then sort of pause and consider what we will do next,” he said. “We could move to another location, we could continue to produce without a home, or we could disband.”
