Voters Head to Polls to Choose New Parliament

Voters went to the polls in a snap general election that amounts to a plebiscite on the leadership of Prime Minster Thaksin Shinawatra, the target of weeks of street protests over allegations of corruption and abuse of power.
All three opposition parties in Parliament boycotted the polls and asked the country’s 45 million registered voters to cast their ballots but tick a box indicating they abstained from choosing a candidate.
Thaksin called the election three years early hoping to reaffirm his mandate.
