* Chelsea Ellis, L.A. Brentwood: Had 17 kills and two blocks to lead visiting Brentwood (16-3, 2-0), ranked No. 7 in the Southern Section Division IV-AA coaches’ poll, past No. 5 Cerritos Valley Christian, 25-14, 19-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-9.
CROSS-COUNTRY
* Alma Escobar, Corona: In her first invitational appearance of the year, the defending state Division I girls’ champion won the senior division race at the Riverside Rubidoux Invitational, covering three miles in 18 minutes 15 seconds.
BOYS’ WATER POLO
* Michael Delaney, Los Alamitos: The freshman made seven of his 13 saves in the fourth quarter as the visiting Griffins (12-6), ranked No. 2 in Division II, upset Newport Harbor, the top-ranked team in Division I, 8-6.
* Thomas Kruip, Santa Ana Foothill: Scored two of his three goals in a five-goal second quarter that gave the Knights (12-4), ranked No. 3 in Division I, the lead for good in a 13-11 victory over La Verne Damien, the fourth-ranked team in Division V.
