A man who prosecutors say was burning grass on his new vacation property in Friendship when the flames got out of control was charged in connection with a 3,900-acre wildfire May 5 that destroyed 30 homes.
Thomas Barnhart, 54, set the fire during the day, while his permit restricted burning to the evening hours, authorities said. He was charged with setting a fire and allowing it to escape, an offense punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
