Anti-Government Protesters Sentenced

A Belarusian court sentenced 20 protesters to three to 15 days in jail for joining an anti-government rally inspired by the upheaval in Kyrgyzstan.
Nearly 1,000 people rallied outside President Alexander G. Lukashenko’s offices Friday demanding his resignation. Police beat back the rally and arrested about three dozen people.
The Minsk central district court convicted 20 protesters on charges including organizing or participating in mass actions intended to violate social order. Rally organizers, who were to be sentenced later, could face up to three years in prison.
