Unwanted Babies Can Be Left at Firehouses

The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to allow mothers to leave unwanted newborns at county firehouses.
Under a state law adopted in 2000, parents can leave babies that are up to 3 days old at emergency rooms without penalty and reclaim them within 14 days.
County fire officials plan to train firefighters and have the program running at fire stations in unincorporated parts of the county within a month.
