South Gate Boys Beat Fremont

Missael Macedo scored only three goals this season, but the last is one he will probably never forget.
The senior midfielder drilled a low shot from 35 yards out just inside the right goal post with 25 seconds left in overtime to give South Gate a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles Fremont and its first City Section boys’ soccer championship Saturday night at East L.A. College.
“I looked at the time and saw it was running out, so I just let the shot go,” Macedo said. “I knew I struck it well and it had a chance of going in.”
Tenth-seeded South Gate (17-5-1) struck first when Macedo’s shot hit the crossbar and senior forward Jessi Lopez dribbled the rebound over the goal line in the 18th minute.
Fremont (11-5-2), seeded eighth, answered six minutes later when a centering pass from the top of the penalty area by senior midfielder Raul Govea carried over the head of Ram goalkeeper Enrique Plata and dropped into the far corner of the goal.
Juan Ruiz appeared to score a go-ahead goal for the Rams in the 14th minute of overtime, but the play was ruled offside.
Four minutes later, Fremont forward Michael Ibarra headed a corner kick by Gelder Contreras off the crossbar.
Edwin Hernandez made 17 saves for the Pathfinders.
In the third-place game, Manual Arts defeated El Camino Real, 3-1.

El Camino Real 4, Palisades 0 -- Freshman Megan Quinn had one goal and two assists and the Conquistadores won their record-tying fifth City Section girls’ title in a row at East L.A. College.
Quinn was left unmarked to the left of the goal in the fifth minute and scored the only goal top-seeded El Camino Real (20-3-1) would need.
The Conquistadores’ title runs equal the mark established twice by West Valley League rival Chatsworth, from 1989 to 1993 and from 1996 to 2000.
Kappeyne had eight saves for 10th-seeded Palisades (12-8-1).
In the Invitational division game, Reseda Cleveland defeated Van Nuys Grant, 4-1.
