Sightseer’s A-List Is Exclusive Even by Hollywood Standards
The new book “1,000 Places to See Before You Die” recommends a grand total of two destinations in L.A. County: the Getty Center and Hollywood (the latter including, strangely enough, the downtown Disney Concert Hall). And the O.C.? It didn’t merit a single mention from author Patricia Schultz. Myself, I think everybody should make at least one trip to Anaheim to see the Los Angeles Angels.

Place to see on a hot day: For many it’s Starbucks No. 8,944 on Day Street in Moreno Valley, which sells more frozen Frappuccinos than any company store in the U.S. or Canada -- about 800 a day. Credit the weather. “Is it over 100?” I asked one employee on Friday. “Oh, yeah,” she answered in a tone that seemed to say, “What a silly question!”

Spinoff? Cliff Hilliard of Diamond Bar found a cafe that will cool you off with hot chocolate (see photo).
*
Chew on this: Frank Scorsone of Rosemead, meanwhile, came upon a fencing for sale ad, with a little food thrown in as an inducement (see accompanying).
*
Chew (part II): I guess the meat in that last item must be plank steak.
*
Pre- and postpartum parking: In Irvine, Karen Fong of San Juan Capistrano spotted a privilege for women who have a lot to carry (see photo).
*
Dueling signs: Chuck Zaremba noticed that in one part of Dana Point there’s a public spat over restroom availability (see photo).

You can’t do that (cont.): Some more offbeat laws passed over the years, as listed in the Long Beach Reporter, a legal newspaper:
* Baldwin Park: Nobody is allowed to ride a bicycle in a swimming pool.
* Carmel: Ice cream may not be eaten while standing on a sidewalk. (Repealed when Clint Eastwood became mayor.)
* Lodi: It is illegal to own or sell Silly String.
* Los Angeles: You may not hunt moths under a streetlight.
* Ontario: Roosters may not crow within the city limits.
* Temecula: Ducks have the right of way to cross Rancho California Road at all times.
* State Legislature: Women may not drive in a housecoat.
*
A driver’s steer-ing problem: Agricultural schools can present interesting hazards. Eric Birkeland, a police dispatcher at Cal Poly Pomona, told the school newspaper about a cellphone call he received from a professor whose car’s path was blocked.
“This professor calls in and says, ‘This bull is just staring at me. What do I do?’ ” said Birkeland. “I told him that he can do one of two things: Put it in reverse or see if the bull is really going to hit him.”
The prof worked things out with the bull.

miscelLAny: For your Adventures-in-the-English-Language file, Phyllis Campbell of Glendale figures that people must be able to see Japan from the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel. Why? The hotel’s radio ad says it affords “beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and beyond.”
