Protecting reporters’ confidential sources

All the confusion over the jailing of Judith Miller was cleared up with Robert Scheer’s column (Opinion, Aug. 23). It refreshed my memory about the purpose of confidentiality of sources for reporters. It is not to protect those who would like to deceive the public but rather to keep the public informed.
Often the people who know the truth would put family and career in danger, so they must speak anonymously. We need more true, brave whistle-blowers. Keeping confidential the source of real information would be a vital public service.
