Chinese vendors’ goal: a better life

I was offended that the writer [of “Chasing the China of Yesterday,” Aug. 7] placed a negative light on those working the tourist sites in China while favoring the underdeveloped Communist side of the country.
Some of the tourist-savvy Chinese who take advantage of tourism booms in modernizing cities come from the same villages depicted so romantically in this article. They left hardscrabble conditions for a better life for themselves and their families.
It’s fun to travel off the beaten path, but favoring natives living in the shadow of a Communist past because it makes a more interesting experience and a better article is a bit condescending.
