Wilson, Valencia Girls’ Golf Teams Set Marks
Two girls’ golf teams have already set school records, and one didn’t even win its match.
Long Beach Wilson defeated Cerritos, 195-199, on Monday at La Mirada Golf Course for the lowest nine-hole total in Bruin history. Kimberly Punyasavatsut led the way with a two-under-par 34. Five of 12 golfers shot below 40.
Valencia set a school record on its home course, Vista Valencia, in a 204-204 tie with Newhall Hart on Monday in a nonleague match. Stevy Loy shot an even-par 33 to lead the Vikings, who could have had a victory if not for a penalty stroke assessed to a player for moving a yardage marker that was in her shot’s line of flight.
Football
Jake Wheeler, who graduated in June from Laguna Beach, was named one of four National High School Scholar-Athletes by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
He is a freshman at Emory. Ceremonies will take place Dec. 7 in New York.
Water Polo
Will Hindle-Katel of North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, one of the top players in Southern California, will be sidelined four to six weeks after suffering a knee injury in a game against Los Alamitos. He has committed to Stanford.
