Hospital to Close 3 Years Earlier Than Scheduled

San Jose Medical Center announced Wednesday that it would close in December because it has lost more than $28 million in the last two years.
The hospital was due to close in 2007 but its owners, HCA Inc. of Nashville, decided that it no longer could afford the losses.
Officials said the cost of treating the uninsured and those on Medicare or Medi-Cal drove up costs.
It is the sixth hospital in the state to close this year because of financial problems. The hospital’s emergency room and trauma center treated up to 35,000 patients each year.
