Re “Downed Russian Jets Raise Security Concerns in U.S.,” Sept. 3: I find it incredible that, in spite of the apparently obvious security problem at U.S. airports and the recent twin terrorist attacks on Russian airliners, our government drags its feet in purchasing and installing the walk-through machines designed to detect explosives on passengers.
According to the article, the technology is mature, and, for about $240 million, 1,800 machines could be implemented at 450 commercial airports in the country. In light of the fact that the government spends $5 billion every month in Iraq, such lack of action borders on criminal negligence.
President Bush and all members of Congress, show us some leadership and act right now to defend airline travelers and crews against such a well-recognized, real threat, before its tragically too late.
