Former chess champion Bobby Fischer won a reprieve from the threat of deportation when a court ruled that he could stay in Japan until it considered a lawsuit he filed to block the move, his supporters said.
Fischer is wanted by the United States on charges of violating international sanctions against Yugoslavia in 1992 when he played a rematch there against longtime Russian rival Boris Spassky.
Fischer advisor John Bosnitch said it could take the court up to a year to rule on the case.
