Closing Day at Del Mar

The $250,000 Del Mar Futurity isn’t the only attraction on today’s closing-day card at Del Mar.

Thanks primarily to upsets by Aziyan and Diamond Indy on Monday, there is a pick six carry-over of $295,875, and because it’s the last day of the season, there will be a mandatory payout.

Besides the Futurity, in which Roman Ruler will be favored, the pick six includes two maiden races for 2-year-olds, the $75,000 Live The Dream Handicap at a mile on the turf, a $20,000 claimer for older fillies and mares, and a $40,000 claimer for older horses on the grass.

In the first maiden race, Megabyte, a son of Chief Seattle, will try two turns for the first time against nine opponents.

Megabyte finished second in his Del Mar debut when fitted with blinkers for the first time on Aug. 7. Mike Smith will ride the Arkansas-bred, who will break from Post 3.

Race of the day: Papa To Kinzie, a speedy daughter of Boston Harbor who has won two of three for Always Believe Inc. and trainer Marty Jones, will make her first start since Feb. 25 in today’s CERF Handicap at Del Mar. The $75,000 race at six furlongs lured only four others -- Mango Escapade, Lady Sabrina, Jetinto Houston and Tizakitty.

One for the road: Ay Dee Dee drops into a softer spot in her return to Northern California and can pick up her second turf victory in today’s seventh at Bay Meadows. Ron Warren Jr. will ride the 3-year-old General Meeting filly for owner Brent Sumja and trainer Aggie Ordonez in the $25,000 claimer at 7 1/2 furlongs.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Chosen Honor, Our Emerald and Alltroienne in the seventh, Roman Ruler in the eighth, Go Bon, S S Strange and Semi Queen in the ninth and Monsieur Boulanger, Helenico, Lookn East and Salvino in the 10th.
