Nader Comes Up Short in Bid for Virginia Ballot

RICHMOND, Va. — Virginia election officials Tuesday denied a spot on November’s presidential ballot to independent candidate Ralph Nader.
Jean R. Jensen, secretary of the State Board of Elections, said registrars had verified 7,342 signatures for Nader, well short of the required 10,000. Candidates for the Libertarian Party and the Constitution Party collected the required number of signatures and would appear on the ballot, Jensen said.
Nader spokesman Kevin Zeese vowed a review of the rejected signatures, saying the campaign would “check and see if they got it right, and if they didn’t, we’ll sue them.”
Nader has met requirements to appear on ballots in 20 states, Zeese said, including nine actively contested by President Bush and Democratic challenger Sen. John F. Kerry.
