Princess Alice, 102; Oldest Member of British Royal Family
Princess Alice, 102, aunt of Queen Elizabeth II and the oldest member of the British royal family, died peacefully in her sleep Friday in London, Buckingham Palace announced Saturday.
Born Lady Alice Christabel Montagu Douglas Scott on Christmas Day, 1901, the princess married Henry, Duke of Gloucester -- the third son of King George V and brother of the queen’s father, King George VI -- in 1935.
A spokesman said the queen was saddened by her aunt’s death and “remembers with gratitude Princess Alice’s service to the monarchy and to the country.” During World War II, Alice worked to boost morale on the home front.
She lived for a time in Australia, where her husband was governor general from 1945 to 1947.
After returning to Britain, she maintained a rigorous schedule of charitable work and official duties well into her 90s.
