Half-Cent Sales Tax for Transportation Projects
Summary: The measure would continue for 30 years a half-cent sales tax for transportation projects. The sales tax is currently scheduled to expire in 2010.
Supporters: San Bernardino Associated Governments, the Automobile Club of Southern California and San Bernardino County Taxpayers for Traffic Relief.
Opponents: The only public opposition has come from Pat Aleman, a San Bernardino County homeowner.
Impact: The measure would generate about $8.2 billion over the 30-year period to widen freeways and interchanges, make improvements on heavily traveled surface streets, and fund mass transit projects and services for senior citizens and the disabled.
Opponents argue that such transportation projects should be funded from gasoline taxes, which are collected by the state. But state lawmakers have diverted much of the state’s gasoline taxes in recent years to help close state budget gaps.
