THE RACE FOR NO. 1
The top two teams solidified their positions, but the rest of the top 10 should look dramatically different in this week’s poll.
No. 1 USC and No. 2 Oklahoma picked up victories over two top-10 teams, with the Trojans downing No. 7 California, 23-17, and the Sooners shutting out No. 5 Texas, 12-0.
No. 3 Georgia will fall from grace after a 19-14 loss to No. 17 Tennessee, probably allowing No. 4 Miami, which was idle Saturday, to move up a spot.
With Texas losing, No. 6 Auburn gets to move into the top five after a 52-7 win over Louisiana Tech. Auburn is 6-0 for the first time since 1997, when it finished 10-3.
No. 8 Florida State was trailing at halftime and had a tough time in a 17-13 win over Syracuse, not a good sign going into this weekend’s matchup with No. 10 Virginia, which was a 30-10 winner over Clemson on Thursday.
No. 9 Purdue got the victory but probably didn’t impress too many voters with a 20-13 win over Penn State.
