A Rout and Record for Georgia’s Greene

Georgia quarterback David Greene passed for 259 yards and set a Division I record with his 40th victory Saturday as No. 8 Georgia routed Kentucky, 62-17, at Lexington, Ky.

Georgia (8-1, 6-1 in the Southeastern Conference) prepped for its upcoming showdown against No. 3 Auburn by scoring on six consecutive possessions against the Wildcats (1-8, 0-6), who have lost seven in a row.

Freshman tailback Thomas Brown rushed for a career-high 130 yards and had three short touchdown runs for Georgia, which won its fourth in a row since losing to Tennessee, the Bulldogs’ only loss. Georgia had a season-high 589 yards.

The Bulldogs’ 62 points were their most since a 70-6 rout of Northeast Louisiana in 1994 and their most against an SEC opponent since beating Vanderbilt, 62-35, in 1984.

Greene is 40-9 as a starting quarterback, breaking former Tennessee standout Peyton Manning’s I-A record for career victories. In four victories over Kentucky, Greene has passed for 1,163 yards and eight touchdowns, including one on Saturday.

Kentucky hadn’t lost a home game to a conference opponent by such a margin since 1993, when the Wildcats fell to Tennessee, 48-0.

“I still can’t envision how this game got away from us the way it did,” Coach Rich Brooks said.

South Carolina 35, Arkansas 32 -- Syvelle Newton threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Troy Williamson with 1:09 left at Columbia, S.C., to make the Gamecocks bowl eligible for the first time since 2001.

South Carolina (6-3, 4-3) blew an 11-point lead in the second half and trailed, 32-28, with 3:24 to go, when Newton, the backup quarterback, led a 62-yard scoring drive.

Arkansas (3-5, 1-4) had a chance, but Matt Jones’ pass down the middle with 46 seconds left was intercepted by Ko Simpson at the two.

Alabama 30, Mississippi State 14 -- Ken Darby ran for a career-high 200 yards in 36 carries at Tuscaloosa, Ala., as the Crimson Tide (6-3, 3-3) brushed aside the Bulldogs (3-6, 2-4) and spoiled the return of Mississippi State Coach Sylvester Croom, a former player and coach for Alabama.

Florida 34, Vanderbilt 17 -- Chris Leak ran for a touchdown and threw for two more at Nashville as the Gators (5-4, 3-4) snapped a two-game losing streak in beating the Commodores (2-7, 1-5) for the 14th time in a row.
