Marlins Throw Padres Aside, 3-1

Florida’s Mike Lowell hit two home runs, San Diego had two players ejected, and the Marlins got the better of a pitchers’ duel in a 3-1 victory Friday at Miami.
The duel extended beyond the mound as San Diego starting pitcher Jake Peavy (2-2) hit Florida starter Carl Pavano (3-1) with a pitch with two out in the seventh inning.
Home plate umpire Doug Eddings immediately tossed Peavy and went to restrain Pavano, who threw his helmet to the ground on his way to first base. After the game, Peavy, who gave up two runs and struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings, would not say whether he had hit Pavano on purpose.
“He felt he needed to throw me out; that’s his call,” Peavy said of the umpire.
Pavano, who gave up one run and four hits in eight innings, said the win was all that mattered.
“He can hit me in the head next time as long as we win the ballgame,” Pavano said.
An inning earlier, the Marlin starter had hit Brian Giles on the bill of his helmet. Giles eventually advanced to third, but the inning ended when Phil Nevin was called out on strikes. Nevin was ejected after slamming down his helmet in an argument with Eddings.
Philadelphia 4, Arizona 1 -- Vicente Padilla (1-4) earned his first victory of the season and Jim Thome hit his 10th homer to lead the Phillies at Phoenix. Arizona’s Randy Johnson (3-3), who had 10 strikeouts, was pulled with the score tied, 1-1, and a runner on first, after 6 1/3 innings.
Chicago 11, Colorado 0 -- Carlos Zambrano (3-1) retired the first 14 batters at Chicago and gave up a career-low two hits in the second shutout of his career.
San Francisco 6, Cincinnati 1 -- Giant starter Kirk Rueter (1-3) gave up three hits in eight innings, walked none and hit a run-scoring double in a four-run eighth at Cincinnati.
Montreal 4, St. Louis 2 -- Brad Wilkerson and Terrmel Sledge each hit two-run homers in the first inning in the Expos’ victory at Montreal.
Milwaukee 7, New York 5 -- Keith Ginter and Lyle Overbay each homered off Tom Glavine (4-2) during a four-run third inning in the Brewers’ victory at New York.
Houston 5, Atlanta 3 -- Jeff Kent hit a two-run homer and solo homer to back starter Tim Redding (1-3) in the Astros’ victory at Atlanta.
