Sudden Oak Death Triggers Quarantine

State regulators have imposed a quarantine on the shipping of plants in Lake County after the discovery of the fungus-like pathogen that causes sudden oak death.
The microbe that causes the disease, Phytophthora ramorum, was found among several bay laurel trees about half a mile from the border with Sonoma County, according to Steve Lyle, a spokesman for the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
Besides killing oak trees, the microbe damages dozens of other plants. The quarantine affects the shipment of all plants known to be susceptible to the infestation. Those plants must be inspected and cleared before they can be shipped.
