Library buys Punch archive

The archive of the British satirical magazine Punch has been sold to the British Library, its former owner said Friday.
Mohamed al Fayed, owner of the Harrods department store, did not disclose the price he received for the archive, which contains more than 1,000 original cartoons, a collection of diaries, letters, oil paintings, statues and artifacts from the offices of the magazine.
Punch, first published in 1841, folded in 1992 after steady falls in circulation. Al Fayed bought the title and revived it in 1996, but it closed for good in 2002.
