Two Orange County residents were convicted in federal court Monday of mail fraud and money laundering for bilking health insurance companies out of millions of dollars by submitting claims for prescriptions that were never written or filled.
Thuan Huy Ha, 44, of Midway City, and My-Huong Thi Hoang, 34, of Garden Grove could be sentenced to more than 20 years in prison by U.S. District Judge Alicemarie H. Stotler on July 12.
The scheme, involving the Ha Pharmacy in Garden Grove, used information from legitimate prescriptions to bilk more than $5 million from various health insurance companies, including Aetna U.S. Healthcare, Caremark and Blue Cross of California.
The case was investigated by the FBI, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the criminal investigation unit of the IRS.
