EU Extends Subsidy Rules for Filmmakers
From Associated Press
The European Commission extended subsidy rules intended to help filmmakers in the European Union better compete with Hollywood imports.
The rules, introduced in 2001 to allow national governments to offer subsidies to movie makers, were to have expired this year but now will run until 2007.
Such European aid has drawn criticism from the U.S. movie industry. The EU contends that the fragmentation of the European market along national and linguistic lines justifies state subsidies to help homegrown productions.
