Baby’s Death Spurs Scrutiny of Foster Care

From Times Wire Reports

After a Bakersfield infant died while in foster care after being hit in the head, the leader of Kern County’s child welfare system pledged to scrutinize her agency and do what is necessary to improve services.

The death of 4-month-old Eduardo Calzada on Monday has affected the Department of Human Services, Director Beverly Beasley Johnson said Tuesday.

Even though the baby’s foster agency was under state control, Johnson said the county has been working to improve its services.

That means extensive internal investigations and the implementation of state-mandated changes, Johnson said.
