‘Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World’

Considered a special-achievement award (like visual effects), this category has only three nominees.
Although it’s often thought to go simply to the loudest, most sound-filled pictures, such as previous winners “Pearl Harbor” or “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers,” this year’s nominees are perhaps remarkable for their relative restraint.
Richard King received his first award and nomination for the nautical realism and pitched battle sounds of “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.”
His fellow nominees, recognized for their work on “Finding Nemo” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” included Gary Rydstrom, a 13-time nominee and seven-time winner, and George Watters II, a seven-time nominee and two-time winner.
