Governor Makes a Play for Casino Revenues

Re “Casino Deals Said to Be Near,” June 16: I don’t get it. Indian casinos have a license to steal, I mean profit, from gaming without competition. There is no oversight or taxation from the state or federal government.
Indians have access to and use the same government services as everyone else. For example, to get into an Indian casino people need to use a state road. Racetracks, card clubs and Vegas casinos pay more than twice what Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing the Indian tribes pay, and the Indians have no competition.
So tell me, Governor, why is 15% such a good deal?
Gaming is not a constitutional right; it’s a privilege given to the very, very few by poorly considered legislation. If the Indians don’t like the tax idea, erect a toll booth on state roads 50 feet from the entrance to every casino. Charge every vehicle $20. I think you will then find a 25% tax will look a lot more attractive to the Indian casinos.
