Joana Carneiro, music director of the Los Angeles Debut Orchestra, is one of the first four young conductors to be named an American Symphony Orchestra League Conducting Fellow. Carneiro, 27, will train for two years with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, mentored by music director Esa-Pekka Salonen as she conducts five to seven community or education concerts in Walt Disney Concert Hall.
A native of Lisbon, Carneiro was chosen from a pool of nearly 300 applicants. She will continue to lead the Debut Orchestra until next June.
She is also pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Michigan.
