Retrial for Scientist Acquitted of Spying

Russia’s Supreme Court overturned last year’s jury acquittal of a Siberian scientist charged with spying for China, and ordered a retrial.
Physicist Valentin Danilov, 53, was charged with spying in 1999 after he tried to sell his invention -- a tool designed to examine ways to destroy redundant satellites -- to a Chinese company.
Danilov, who denied the charges, became the first suspected spy to appear before a jury since Russia reinstated jury trials for serious crimes in 2002 as part of legal reforms.
