Plans to Kill Hundreds of Whales Scaled Back

From Times Wire Reports

In a move that was hailed by conservation groups, Iceland pulled back from plans to kill hundreds of whales over a two-year period.

Iceland now aims to kill 25 minke whales this year as part of a scientific study, many fewer than it had originally planned, the Fisheries Ministry said.

Last year, Iceland said it would kill 100 sei whales, 200 fin whales and 200 minke whales over two years as part of its research effort, prompting protests from Britain and more than 20 other nations.

Now Iceland says it will not catch whales of the other species.
